Imagine a world where people wear monocles unironically, top hats are everyday fashion, and instead of cars, you ride to work on a coal-powered mechanical spider with far too many unnecessary pipes. Computers? Nah — you’ve got a difference engine the size of a piano, powered by steam, and it crashes every time a pigeon sits on it.

In steampunk, more gears = better engineering, goggles are worn even indoors for no reason, and if your invention isn’t at least 80% brass, are you even trying?
